Back in 1996, I remember when the Spice Girls were on MTV with their first music video “Wannabe”. There they were, Ginger Spice (Geri Halliwell), Sporty Spice (Melanie Chisholm), Scary Spice (Melanie Brown), Posh Spice (Victoria Beckham), and Baby Spice (Emma Bunton), a quintet of gorgeous pop stars. Each Spice Girl is different, which makes them a great team of singers. “Girl power!”

Soon more music videos followed and they just got better and better. Even the “Pepsi” commercial was awesome. I became so into their music that I not only got all of their albums, but each of their singles too. The only reason for that was because each single also included a bonus track, which wasn’t featured on any of the albums. I don’t understand why that was.

I also used to collect Spice Girls merchandise. Most of which was the little unauthorized biography books and issues of Spice Girls magazines. Remember these?

In 1997, shortly after the release of their second album, the Spice Girls had their own movie called Spice World. It was most often described as, “A rip-off from A Hard Day’s Night“, but I thought it was a creative film based on the misadventures of these lovely pop stars as exaggerated stereotypes of themselves.

As the Spice Girls travel with their road manager Clifford (Richard E. Grant), they ride in a double-decker bus that works like a five-person apartment. Each Spice Girl has her own section filled with their favorite things based on their personas. Now that’s impressive. Did those doors say, “Maximum Capacity 5 Girls”?

The Spice Girls have all sorts of strange encounters. For instance, while in the woods, they find aliens from outer space who are very big fans. The aliens wanted tickets to their concert at Albert Hall, but they were all sold out. It doesn’t surprise me. I can remember hearing on MTV news one time that tickets to other Spice Girls concerts get sold out as quickly as 12 minutes. I wonder if that’s a world record.

Another interesting scene was when the Spice Girls spend the night in a big old house where Damien (Richard O’Brien), a paparazzi, sneaks around like a ninja to collect some dirt on them. Somehow I can definitely see the paparazzi as ninjas with cameras. Think about it. They hide in the shadows and sneak around while stalking their targets. Then after taking a shot, they quickly disappear without a trace. Later comes assassination, courtesy of the dirt on the tabloids. It goes to show that all celebrities have to be cautious because those paparazzi ninjas are everywhere.

Then there’s a scene about the Spice Girls as the “Spice Force Five”. Emma is the martial arts expert, Mel C as a counter espionage agent, Mel B as the explosives expert, Geri as a master of disguise, and Victoria who just looks good. I could see this as a TV series. Too bad it never happened.

The Spice Girls may have their differences, but they seem like a fun group. When things got tough, they stuck together through it all.

If I had to choose my most favorite Spice Girl, it would be a tie between Baby Spice and Sporty Spice, but it was really what the five of them could do together that truly makes the Spice Girls a top singing group to me. That’s why I felt that everything changed after Geri left the group when she did. In fact, it wouldn’t have made any difference if any one of the others had left instead. Soon they all went solo. Some of those albums were good, but the originals Spice and Spiceworld are the real classics.

As I have mentioned before on an earlier post, the Dungeons & Dragons franchise has numerous versions, which makes it difficult to understand and keep track of. Dungeons & Dragons (New Line Platinum Series) is no exception because it doesn’t feature any of the characters from the animated series from the 80s. Yet I still find it enjoyable.

This story takes place at the kingdom of Ismer. The Empress, played by the lovely Thora Birch, struggles to make equality between humans and mages. The wicked mage Profion (Jeremy Irons) tries to overthrow her and take over Ismer with the help of Damodar (Bruce Payne), a top warrior who likes to wear blue lipstick. I must admit, Jeremy Irons does a lot of overacting as Profion, but it works. Eat your heart out, Venger.

The heroes are two thieves Ridley (Justin Whalin) and Snails (Marlon Wayans), Elwood (Lee Arenberg) the dwarf, and Marina (Zoë McLellan) a pretty mage. They go on a quest to find the Rod of Savrille, which has the power to control red dragons.

The tasks involved are not easy. The rod is kept in a dragon temple. In order to get in, they have to find a ruby called the eye of the dragon from Thieves Guild Master Xilus (Richard O’Brien). Sounds exciting, but it gets better. Xilus keeps it in his maze of the Antius Guild, which is filled with all sorts of deadly perils. Much like what you’d find in a video game. Soon after that, Norda (Kristen Wilson) the elf joins the others on their way to the dragon temple.

There they face even more dangers, which include Beholders, quicksand traps, soldiers, and Damodar before the final battle against Profion and his overacting. Now there’s a mage you don’t want to mess with.

This film is a great fantasy adventure story. It has everything a Dungeons & Dragons fan would want. Heroism, magical beings, sorcery, perilous traps, strange dungeons, and gorgeous actresses like Thora Birch and Zoë McLellan. Could it get any better?

One last item: As popular as the franchise is, Dungeons & Dragons also has a unique album called Dungeons & Dragons – Official Roleplaying Soundtrack, which is all instrumental music performed by Midnight Syndicate. Although some of the tracks do run a little long, this awesome album really sets the mood for an exciting fantasy adventure. I only saw this available at several different conventions, but it’s still quite a find.

Elvira

Elvira started as a character, who hosted a show in the early 80s, called Elvira’s Movie Macabre.  Then she starred in her first feature film, Elvira, Mistress of the Dark.
Elvira heads for the town of Fallwell to collect an inheritance.  When she arrives, most of the adults don’t like her, but the kids all love her.  Not just for her body.  They were more like bosom buddies.  Then of course, there are the men who try to sexually harass her.  For example, when Elvira tries to sell the house she inherited, the real-estate agent won’t keep his hands to himself.  Elvira bravely resists, but the results still turn out badly for her.

This was a great movie based on Elvira’s back-story.  If only she had an opportunity to fight along side the Charmed ones.  Now that would be cool.

I met Elvira at Spooky Empire 2008 and she was really nice.  There was a huge line to get her autograph at around 5:00, but she didn’t show up until around 7:00.  I guess Elvira doesn’t come out until after dark.

Elvira and me

Years later after Elvira’s first film, she returns in Elvira’s Haunted Hills which spoofs Vincent Price movies.  I remember seeing some of those old films based on the writings of Edgar Allan Poe.  They were very well made horror films.

Anyway, this movie takes place in the year 1851 and Elvira has a personal assistant, Zou Zou (Mary Jo Smith).  They both stay the night at a cursed castle.  What are the odds, right?  The castle has everything from a piano bar to a secret dungeon with instruments of torture.  Could it get any better for this time period?Elvira

Elvira even does a musical number in this movie.  Even though Lord Hellsubus (Richard O’Brien) can’t stand all the noise, that doesn’t stop Elvira from doing what she does best.  At the end of the number, no one applauds.  But if I had been there, I would have.  I also liked Lady Roxanna (Heather Hopper).  She seems like such a nice girl.  Even if she does carry the Hellsubus family curse.

This was a creative sequel and I look forward to any more new Elvira sequels.  As she would say, “Unpleasant dreams”.
