Yeah, like me.

What makes a great villain? Usually it’s a wickedly tough adversary that the hero(s) must go up against in order to protect the innocent. In many superhero stories, there are usually quite a few different archenemies. Each of them is colorful in their own way.

Let’s take Batman for example. He fights criminals all over Gotham City, but the only villains who are most popular are the colorful ones, such as Joker, Penguin, Cat Woman, Riddler, etc. because they stick out from the rest as much as the superhero.

Dick Tracy is another perfect example. The criminals he fights all have various quirks, which they are named after, like Mumbles, Flat Top, Prune Face, Itchy, etc. I’ll tell ya, if it wasn’t for that, Dick Tracy would never have made it as an icon, no matter how heroic he was.

From an artistic perspective, a great villain is an enemy who is not only colorful, but is evenly matched to the hero. That way it appears more like a 50/50 chance on who will come out on top.

I have here a top five list of my most favorite match-ups that help explain my point.

#5) He-Man vs. Skeletor from He-Man and the Masters of the Universe: Skeletor’s motive is simple, he wants to rule the world. He-Man is the only one who can stop him and maintain peace in Eternia. It sounds a little one-sided at first, but now I understand that it’s merely a power struggle between the strongest beings representing good and evil.

#4) Obi-Won Kenobi (Ewan McGregor) vs. Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen) from Star Wars Episode 3: Revenge of the Sith: These two Jedi warriors used to be partners. With the seduction of Darth Sidous and unfair treatment of the Jedi counsel, Anakin had completely turned rogue. That soon led to their exciting one on one battle, but what was really touching was when after Obi-Won won the fight, he still felt devastated from Anakin’s betrayal just as any mentor would feel if their protégé turns on them.

#3) John Spartan (Sylvester Stallone) vs. Simon Phoenix (Wesley Snipes) from Demolition Man: The motives for these two need no introduction, cop vs. convict. However, the relationship goes deeper when Phoenix gets Spartan arrested with him. The battle scenes between them became more intense when Phoenix develops some new combat skills, which challenges Spartan even more.

#2) Buffy (Sarah Michelle Gellar) vs. Faith (Eliza Dushku) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer: These two are both slayers and used to be friends. Although Faith was troubled to begin with, her reason for turning rogue was different. She wanted to live on the wild side and be free, but Buffy knows better. That soon caused some friction between them as to how the slaying should be done. On the other hand, don’t you just love a good cat fight?

#1) Xena (Lucy Lawless) vs. Callisto (Hudson Leick) from Xena: Warrior Princess: Let’s certainly not forget this classic match-up. Years ago when Xena was evil, she conquered Callisto’s home village and killed her family. That drove her to become more like Xena in every way possible while vowing revenge. Callisto had definitely succeeded, even from beyond the grave, if you know what I mean. As beautiful as she was, it’s really Callisto’s psychotic persona that makes her a favorite of mine.

Basically a good villain is one who is worthy of the title. Whether it’s personal grudges or being consumed by a dark power, villains have goals, but it’s their evil intent that gives them bad karma, which is also enjoyable to watch at times.

Shriek If You Know What I Did Last Friday the 13th is another spoof of the Scream trilogy, but this one goes in another direction. The basic story is same, which is about a masked killer on the loose terrorizing high school teens. Not only does this movie include tidbits from I Know What You Did Last Summer, but also tidbits from other films like There’s Something About Mary, American Pie, Teaching Mrs. Tingle, Grease, and others.

This spoof spares no expense on gags. The main characters have names like Dawson Deary (Harley Cross), Slab (Simon Rex), Boner (Danny Strong), and Doughy Prime Suspect (Tom Arnold). The high school, known as Bulimia Falls High, has rooms for a nail salon, tanning salon, and women’s studies a.k.a. breast augmentation. Even the drinking fountains have a choice of scotch, vodka, and gin. It’s unbelievable. Who built that school anyway?

Now here’s something unusual. The killer is out in the open killing people at the school, but nobody notices as if things like this occur all the time. That does not make sense to me. Although there is curiosity about who the killer might be, the mystery level of this horror film tends to go way off base.

Julie Benz, who is well known as Darla from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, plays Barbara the pretty and popular teen beauty pageant winner. When I met her at Mini MegaCon 2009, my sister told Julie how thrilled I was to have met her. Then she says, “That must be exciting for you.” Okay, that was strange. She also wasn’t too thrilled about the photos of choice for autographs. I thought this one was good.

Another Buffy the Vampire Slayer actor in this film was Danny Strong who played Jonathon. Here he plays Boner, a teen who constantly worries about never getting laid. Sorry, but that gag gets old after awhile.

It takes a lot to unmask this killer. And I’m not just talking about suspects.

This wasn’t really a bad movie. I’m glad that there was no gross humor, but I still think this parody was way too overdone. It wasn’t nearly as funny as Scary Movie.

Regular readers of my blog might recall I have mentioned visiting Las Vegas back in 2004. Madame Tussauds Wax Museum was only part of my grand experience in such a famous city.

These wax statues look so realistic, don't they.

My sister and I saw all kinds of different shows and performers. In fact, this was the first place I’ve seen so many different celebrities perform live. Some of my favorites include the Blue Man Group, Judy Tenuta performing standup comedy, Tim Conway and Harvey Korman as a comedy team, and Penn & Teller doing magic acts with guns and boxes. Penn sure makes fire eating look easy.

There are also quite a few celebrity impressionists. There was a concert with impressionists of Elton John, Barry White, the Blues Brothers, Aretha Franklin, and Elvis Presley, (who is a top icon in Vegas) singing some of their hit songs and shaking hands with audience members including myself. It was real exciting.

Every hotel has a casino. Despite that the air is always filled with cigarette smoke, it’s real neat in there. The showgirls are such a nice group. If there’s an opportunity to get your photo with one, or two, take it. I sure did, as you can see.

As for slot machines, there are many different types. The best way I can think of to choose is to relax your mind and get a feel for the right one. And make sure it’s a slot that’s far away from an ashtray. But a word of precaution: Although that method has helped me win some, I can’t guarantee anything any more than anyone else can. In fact, that’s as far as I would go when it comes to gambling.

I don’t know if I’ll ever get to go to Las Vegas again, but it was a great experience that I’ll never forget.

Darkness Falls (Special Edition) has an interesting take on the legend of the tooth fairy. She was once a nice old lady named Matilda Dixon. She exchanges a gold coin for a lost baby tooth. The children all loved her. One day, Matilda’s house caught fire and her face was hideously scarred. The townspeople hanged Matilda, but she vows revenge. Once anyone loses their last baby tooth, Matilda seeks them out and kills them in the night because she can’t stand light. Spooky, huh? Almost like a Grimm fairytale.

Emma Caufield, best known as Anya from Buffy the Vampire Slayer, stars as Caitlin Greene. I met her at Mini MegaCon 2009. She was nice, but not very talkative. When I went to get her autograph I told her that I liked the Buffy the Vampire Slayer episode when she dressed as a cute bunny. Emma wasn’t very enthusiastic, but she did say that she had about five other comments about it and fans like to see that kind of stuff.

In this film, Caitlin’s younger brother Michael (Lee Cormie), who is young enough to be her son, has become Matilda’s next target. So Caitlin seeks help from her childhood friend Kyle (Chaney Kley), who’s been one of Maltilda’s targets for years. That masked witch never gives up, does she.

Kyle becomes a battery and light fanatic just to stay safe. He even takes massive medications, but that’s not the way to stop a demon from killing you. You have to kill it first. Of course, doctors or any other nonbelievers of the supernatural would never see it that way.

This was a good horror film, but I always used to think that the tooth fairy was good. This one doesn’t even brush her own teeth from the looks of it.

Ed Gale Autograph

Pinata: Survival Island stars Nicholas Brendan and Jaime Presley as college students, among a group of others, who travel to an island on a scavenger hunt.  While gathering men’s and women’s underpants all over, one team finds a piñata that was possessed by evil spirits and decides to open it.  What are the odds, right?

Then it becomes a fight for survival as the Piñata tries to kill everyone and take their souls.  He’s like Shang Tsung (Mortal Kombat) on steroids, but he prefers to beat his victims with a stick.  A little poetic justice, I guess.  The Piñata is smart too.  He cuts the boats so no one can escape and even takes several demonic forms as a way to quickly get around.  It doesn’t work as a camouflage because he still looks like he’s made out of lava rock.

Nicholas Brendan is well known for his role as Xander from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  I met him at FX Convention 2008 and he was nice.

I also met Ed Gale, who played the Piñata monster, at Spooky Empire 2009.  He was a nice guy and great to talk to.  I also found out that Ed Gale was one of the Dink men on Spaceballs, which is one of my favorite Mel Brooks films.  He was also Chucky on the original Child’s Play and a stunt man in two of the sequels.

This is an exciting horror film overall.  In fact, I can actually see this story line on an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  If you think about it, this wouldn’t be the first time Xander went on a solo mission.
