Fairytales have always been a popular part of fantasy adventure. Then when Shrek (Full Screen Single Disc Edition) came along, it was the start of a new trend of CGI animated movies. Fairytale Fantasies.

In this movie, an ogre named Shrek (voice of Mike Myers) lived alone in a swamp because he was feared by all of the villagers just for being an ogre. Shrek isn’t intimidated though. In fact, he prefers his privacy.

Soon Shrek meets Donkey (voice of Eddie Murphy) who wants to be his friend. Oddly, Shrek doesn’t want him for a friend. Sure Donkey can be annoying sometimes, but that’s no reason for Shrek to keep pushing him away. That just makes Shrek less likable to me.

Later that evening, various fairytale creatures invade Shrek’s house. “Dead broad off the table.” It turns out that a dictator named Lord Farquaad (voice of John Lithgow) forced them all there. So, Shrek and Donkey head to Farquaad’s place in Duloc to straighten this whole thing out. Though it’s not to help them. It’s for Shrek to help himself. They soon arrive in Duloc, which spoofs Disneyland a little bit. Farquaad immediately orders his men to attack. Shrek shows some cool fighting skills that please the crowd. I wonder where he learned how to fight.

After that, Farquaad sends Shrek and Donkey to rescue Princess Fiona in a tower from a dragon. The run down castle has neat scenery inside. As Shrek finds Fiona (voice of Cameron Diaz), Donkey deals with Dragon, who ends up falling for him. Now that’s an unusual twist, but it sure helped bring Dragon to the side of good.

The scene where Shrek, Donkey, and Fiona escape from Dragon is real exciting. Dragon gets tangled up in that chandelier chain as the others barely make it out alive after Dragon takes out the bridge. It’s incredible. However, the trip back to Duloc is a struggle as Fiona acts difficult toward Shrek and Donkey. But soon they all warm up to each other and Shrek falls for Fiona. What an unlikely pair. Next to Donkey and Dragon.

Fiona has some amazing skills. Her singing voice causes birds to explode and she has martial art skills that were inspired by Charlie’s Angels, which is very appropriate for Cameron Diaz. Was she fixing her hair during while battling with Robin Hood and his merry men chorus line?

This was a good funny movie, but I preferred the sequels better. One thing I don’t understand is why Donkey and Dragon never had real names.

Following the success of Shrek, Universal Studios Theme Park had a 3-D movie attraction called Shrek 4-D. The story takes off right after Shrek and Fiona’s wedding. It starts with Farquaad returning as a ghost. With the help of Thelonious, he seeks revenge. It’s real exciting as Shrek and Donkey go after Thelonious to rescue Fiona through all kinds of dangerous terrain. The short story is also featured on the DVD Shrek 3-D, all except for the animatronic parts. After a heartwarming ending, it totally sets up for Shrek 2. On to the next movie… in another three years.

Mario Kart Wii with Wii Wheel is one of the most popular games on the Nintendo Wii as well as the first Wii game to use a steering wheel as a controller. The object is like any other racing game. You try to win races in various race routes, but these are no ordinary race routes. The different Super Mario Bros. characters have to drive through meadows, gorges, dangerous castles, even outer space. You won’t see this at Talladega, folks.

The routes that I think are the most difficult are the ones without barriers. That’s right. In stages like “Wario’s Gold Mine” and “Rainbow Road” it’s easy to fall in a hole. It won’t kill ya, but you will fall behind.

Throughout the races, you will find question blocks that will give you items to throw at your fellow racers as well as booster items to help you gain the lead. The items are always random, which makes it unreliable. But usually it depends on where you are in the race. If you were in last, you’d get a bullet bill that gets you back near the lead. If you’re first, all you get is a banana peel. Seriously, do banana peels in the road actually cause car accidents?

One route I get concerned with is “Moonview Highway”, where you have to go through a busy city street. Really. What kind of idiot would put a race route there during rush hour?

It’s great that nobody gets killed in this game, but with all that goes on I’m surprised that nobody even gets hurt. Even after falling into lava pits. Makes you wonder about the health insurance in the Mushroom Kingdom.

As you win more races and get gold medals, more characters and cars are unlocked. Sometimes the task requires winning WFC ghost races. That sounds simple. To me, the hard part is finding that mode. The strategy guide provides the details on how to unlock each character/car. Some tasks may appear very difficult. Especially the ones that require a Star rank or completing race routes in the 150 mode. On the bright side, the alternative is to play a certain number of games. Like at least a thousand or so. As Waluigi would say, “Everybody cheats. Next time I cheat.”

It’s usually best to stick with characters you’re comfortable with. One of my favorites is Baby Peach. She’s a hilariously adorable wild child. No wonder Princess Peach keeps getting in trouble. Even as an adult.

After getting gold medals in the 50, 100, and 150 modes, you unlock Mirror mode. There, all of the race routes are in reverse. That may seem awkward after being used to the regular race routes, especially with the difficulty level of the 150 mode, but it’s real creative.

Normally I never was into racing games, because it’s so difficult to stay on the road. Let alone keep up. In fact, as a kid, the only part of auto racing I ever liked was that the cars were all numbered. None of the cars in this game are numbered, but Mario Kart Wii turned out to be a great Wii game to play. Hooray for Mario!

I definitely looked forward to Street Fighter (Widescreen Extreme Edition). The video game franchise had three different versions of Street Fighter 2 before it premiered. Each character was unique with different special moves to creatively use against an opponent as he/she travels to different countries just to win a one on one match. Now we actually get to see the story line behind it all.

There were several articles about it in “Gamepro” magazine; mainly to show whom was going to play each character. The only actor I recognized at the time was Raul Julia, who played Gomez Addams on The Addams Family movie and its sequel Addams Family Values. It turns out that this was his last movie. I know that seems strange since Jean-Claude Van Damme has been a martial arts superstar for years. Then again, he never did any G-Rated or PG-Rated films. So, I wasn’t old enough to know about him yet.

This film is like a cross between a martial arts movie and a war movie. Yet there are some relations to the story line of Double Dragon. For instance, the city of Shadowloo has a curfew and General M. Bison (Raul Julia) transforms a solder named Carlos Blanka (Robert Mammone) into a monster. Here’s a twist. On occasion, there’s a DJ on the radio who says, “Good morning, Shadowloo”, and tells jokes. Sound familiar?

Many of the fighting moves are matched to the video game versions. Sure there are no fireballs or other projectiles featured, but that keeps the movie on a more realistic level. Not even Chun-Li’s (Ming Na) lightning and whirlwind kicks were featured, but she is one tough cookie.

When Ryu (Byron Mann) is set up to fight Vega (Jay Tavare) in a cage match, it wasn’t nearly as intense as Wolverine’s cage match on the X-Men movie. No thanks to Colonel Guile (Jean-Claude Van Damme) and his tank. Darn, Ken (Damian Chapa) was even gonna fight next. Come to think of it, this was the first time I had ever heard of cage matches. It’s like wrestling, only rougher and actually contained inside the ring.

Zangief (Andrew Bryniarski) was a funny character. In the scene when everyone sees a truck of explosives heading their way into the tent, Zangief quickly reacts by saying, “Quick! Change the channel!” Not too bright, is he. In the video game versions, Zangief is one of the easiest fighters to beat. Considering that he’s a seven-foot tall Russian muscleman, who wrestles bears for fun.

One very memorable item is the control panel Bison uses to attack Guile’s stealth boat. It’s just like the joystick and buttons on the arcade game. Very clever.

I also collected Street Fighter 2 action figures at the time. They were along the lines of G.I. Joe, according to the commercials.

When it comes to finding all of the Street Fighter 2 characters, the only one who isn’t in this film is Fei Long. I still find this movie a classic, despite that.

Welcome back. This next film Grindhouse Presents, Death Proof – Extended and Unrated (Two-Disc Special Edition) is more of a slasher, which stars Kurt Russell as Stuntman Mike, a stuntman with a killer car. Metaphorically and literally speaking.

This movie also features two different groups of lovely young women. The first group includes Rose McGowan in a much different role from Planet Terror, Vanessa Ferlito (who I remember as one of the cheerleaders from Man of the House), and Sydney Pointier as Jungle Julia the DJ who likes to show her gorgeous legs. (Oh, yeah.) Even Marley Shelton returns as a nurse named Dakota. What are the odds, right?

The jukebox plays all sorts of great music. That, along with the comedic characters, makes the bar a nice laid back environment, including the lap dance that was supposably “cut short”.

The second group includes Rosario Dawson (who I remember best as Valerie from Josie and the Pussycats), Tracie Thoms (who I remember from the short lived comedy series Wonderfalls), and stuntwoman Zoë Bell as herself. They’re all on a road trip only to be attacked by Stuntman Mike. Doesn’t he ever quit?

I met Zoë Bell at the FX Convention in 2008. She was really nice. When I got her autograph, I found out that she was a stunt double on Xena: Warrior Princess and Kill Bill. My sister and I even told Zoë that we were looking forward to seeing her in more films. She excitedly crosses her fingers and says, “Me too.”

These movies are both great overall, filled with the perfect combination of action and sex appeal.
