This creative series stars Sarah Michelle Gellar as Buffy the Vampire Slayer.  Now attending high school in Sunnydale, Buffy not only has a new watcher, but a Scooby gang as well.  One thing I don’t understand is that in the movie version, Buffy was a senior.  On this show, she starts as a sophomore.  A little strange, but then again, the series does work better with more of the seasons taking place at the high school.  Smart move, Joss Whedon.

Buffy wax statue

In case you were wondering. This is not the real Sarah Michelle Gellar with me. It's a statue from Madame Tussauds Wax Museum in Las Vegas in 2004.

The show is like a cross between Eerie Indiana and Blade.  Other than vampires, Buffy the Vampire Slayer (1997-2003) has creative takes on other types of old monsters like zombies, werewolves, robots, witches, ghosts, fairytale creatures like the Gentlemen, Hansel and Gretel, and even Dracula himself.  There are also many different types of demons.  Just like how Futurama has many different types of aliens and mutants.  As much of a drama as this show is, it’s also got it’s share of comedy.

As if all of those monsters weren’t difficult enough, the various monsters aren’t the only threats the hellmouth had to offer.  There were times that Buffy and the gang were confronted by magic spells and curses.  Such items include; animal possession, a student turning invisible because she was being treated that way, everyone turning into whatever Halloween costume they were wearing, drinking beer that turns college students into cavemen, worst fears coming to life, and the ever popular, everybody suddenly breaking into song.  Now that’s creative material.

The fight scenes are amazing.  When a vampire is killed, they turn to dust with a neat effect.  Too bad it doesn’t work the same way with killing demons.

There were some other great characters also.  But one character who went through a major transformation was Spike (James Marsters).  He started out as a tough villain.  Then he had a chip put in his head that prevents him from harming any humans, which forced him to be a good guy.  He was a pretty useful member of the Scooby gang though.

Clare Kramer and me

Clare Kramer at FX Convention 2009

I’ve met a lot of cast members from this series at several different conventions.

The cast members I’ve met so far are; Nicholas Brendan, James Marsters, Clare Kramer, Julie Benz, Juliet Landau, Charisma Carpenter, Emma Caulfield, Amber Benson, Adam Busch, and Camden Toy.

I’d have to say that out of all of the Buffy cast members that I’ve had the opportunity to meet, Clare Kramer, who played the evil goddess Glory in season 5, was the sweetest.

Look for pictures of other cast members from Buffy the Vampire Slayer on future posts.

untitledHercules & Xena: The Battle For Mount Olympus
This “straight to video” animated movie premiered during the fourth season of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and the third season of Xena: Warrior Princess. The story line is similar to the Disney version of Hercules. The titans are on the loose and it’s up to Hercules and company to stop them.

Some of the original actors from both shows voice their characters. I must admit, the action isn’t the same. But I still find it just as exciting. This film also features Hera as a different looking character. For the first time she’s not just a pair of giant eyes. In the later seasons of Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, that continues with Hera played by Meg Foster, who also played Evil-Lynn on Masters of the Universe the movie.

Artemis turns Gabrielle into a giant eagle to get Xena to help out. That was a little disappointing. I’d liked to have seen Gabby fight with her bo staff some more. On the other hand, as an eagle, Gabrielle was very helpful with air travel to Mount Olympus.

I like this movie. Although I was curious to see what Joxer, Salmoneus, Autolycus, or even Falafel would’ve looked like animated if any of them had been in it.

Of all the different variety shows I’ve seen, The Muppet Show (1976-1981) definitely stands out as a favorite.  It’s a perfect balance of onstage performances, backstage story lines, and one-liners from Statler and Waldorf as they express their criticism about the various acts.  Jim Henson was a genius.

I used to take drama classes at a community college.  That made the story lines more relatable.  For example, let’s say that you were part of a live theater show, amateur or professional.  Sure, you and the cast are performing the same show every night.  But what about backstage while you’re waiting for your cues.  There’s usually an unseen story happening, which can sometimes affect how you perform onstage.

The Muppet Show also shows an artistic side from each of the different Muppet characters.  Reoccurring regulars include Miss Piggy, Fozzie, Gonzo, Rowlf, and the Swedish Chef.  It’s a great assortment. Along with the individual acts, there’s also sketch comedy.  Reoccurring skits include Vet’s Hospital, Pigs in Space, At the Dance, News flash, Muppet Labs, and Muppet Sports.  I have to hand it to Kermit.  He’s always open to all kinds of acts.  No matter how strange they are.  Considering how much hard work and dedication is needed to put on a show.  As for the acts that don’t run smoothly, I feel that trying too hard is what causes it.  For instance, Fozzie tries too hard to be funny in his standup, Gonzo makes his daredevil acts too complicated, and Miss Piggy always wants to be the star of everything.  She makes threats if she doesn’t get her way, just like a diva.  There’s always one of those.  Don’t you just hate that?

The Muppet Show has opened a lot of doors for me as well.  It was how I first heard of celebrities such as John Cleese, Ruth Buzzi, Julie Andrews, Lynn Redgrave, Twiggy, and the late Peter Sellers.

This show has many different types of songs.  Some of which are old Broadway show tunes.  That’s how I first heard about them.  Sometimes I wonder.  If most of the music featured is not original, then how do you suppose they get the music rights so easily?  Well, at least when the celebrity guest star is a singer performing his or her own music, like Elton John, Paul Simon, or Deborah Harry, it’s all covered.  For that episode anyway.

Overall, I think The Muppet Show is very creative.  As comedically strange as the acts and skits are, Kermit knows how to keep the show professional.  If he can help it.

The only other relatable series that I find just as good is The Gong Show.  Random people perform all kinds of different acts, good and bad.  And the host, Chuck Barris, is laid back and comedic.  He’s no Kermit, but he’s a still a good emcee.

Beavis and Butthead (1993-1997) was one of MTV’s most popular shows back in the 90s.  In fact, it was one of the first animated shows I’ve seen that was not suitable for children.  I’ve got to tell ya.  Beavis and Butthead are hilarious.  They’re like a cross between Dumb and Dumber and South Park.  All about a couple of unintelligent teens, who are foulmouthed.  And let’s not forget the signature laughs those two have.  I think that’s what helps make their idiocy more likable.

There were other classic characters also.  They include Mr. Van Driessen the mellow hippie teacher, Buzzcut the blunt Drill Sargent of a teacher, and Principal McVicker who is always on edge.  Tom Anderson, the next door neighbor, is a lot like Hank Hill from King of the Hill.  Not only the same voice, but the same personality too.  “I tell you what.”  I guess, in a way, he got his own series just like Daria.  Another favorite.

During the episodes, Beavis and Butthead watch various music videos and make fun of them.  I think it’s hilarious to hear what they have to say, even though Beavis can get annoying sometimes.  I don’t know how many times Butthead has told him to shut up.

There are times when Beavis and Butthead want to join Todd and his street gang.  I don’t understand why, because Todd is always so awful to them.  Another classic item is about Beavis’ alter ego, Cornholio.  It only comes out when Beavis eats too much sugar.  It’s odd that only one little taste of sugar gets him addicted so easily and he gorges himself.  Talk about sugar high.

This series is an MTV classic with its brand of humor.  Not to mention their t-shirts with names of heavy metal bands on them and classic catchphrases like “Come to Butthead”, and “Fire! Fire!”  Cool, huh?

Like Hercules: The Legendary Journeys (1995-1999), Xena: Warrior Princess (1995-2001) was also well made with battle scenes, special effects, story lines based on Greek Mythology, and lots of fighting without buckets of blood.  Of course Xena (Lucy Lawless) is a fictional character but she still stood out as her own.  A highly skilled sexy kickbutt warrior woman with many of the same qualities as Hercules.  Some of Xena’s most memorable skills are the highly exaggerated ones like; pressure points that cuts off blood flows within the human body, rapid kicks while jumping in midair, and of course her chakram that works like a boomerang with an attitude.  Makes ya wonder.  How does she do that?

Xena was a heartless violent warlord until she met Hercules and got her own series.  She spends the rest of her life making amends for her past deeds.  Her sidekick Gabrielle (Renee O’Connor) was very likable.  She not only fights by Xena’s side with a bo staff, but also keeps Xena from reverting back to her violent ways.  There were some points where the two of them appeared to be lesbian lovers, but I don’t think that was the case at all.  As far as I can tell, it was just a close friendship.  Very close.

Of all the different villains Xena has fought, Callisto (Hudson Leick) is the perfect arch nemesis.  And I’m not just saying that because she’s pretty.  The two of them are evenly matched rivals and Callisto has personal issues with Xena.  The trauma Callisto received during her childhood also caused her to become totally insane. Callisto cheats death and becomes immortal later on.  I’m sure it was merely a way for her to appear in more episodes. Considering that she was killed after only her second appearance.

A reoccurring character in the last season was Eve, Xena’s daughter all grown up, played by the beautiful Adrienne Wilkinson. I met her at Mega-Con Orlando in 2008. She was very sweet and as you can see really gorgeous too!

 Adrienne Wilkinson and me

Some of the memorable characters from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys make appearances on this show also.  They include Autolycus, Salmoneus, Ares, Aphrodite, and let’s not forget Joxer (Ted Raimi).  He may be a clutzy warrior wannabe, but his heart was always in the right place.  You gotta admire him for that.

This series was just as much of a favorite as Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.  Like I said before.  Whoever thought that Greek Mythology would be so fun to learn?
